Board of Directors is ultimately responsible for the quality of medical care and provision of resources in the facilities and programs operated by the Vancouver Island Health Authority. This responsibility extends to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who is the Board of Directors’ representative.
An Executive Team leads the delivery of services through the Vancouver Island Health Authority's Integrated Health Services. Our services (or programs) are led by co-management teams comprised of both a physician and non-physician leader.
Physicians that assume a leadership role in the Vancouver Island Health Authority's program structure are called Medical Directors or Executive Medical Directors. These medical leaders are accountable to the Executive Vice-President and Chief Medical Officer.
Physicians that assume a leadership role within the health authority's medical staff structure are identified by department (once granted privileges, medical staff are appointed to a department). Department Heads lead members of their department and have delegates who assist at the sub-division and/or site level. Medical staff leaders are accountable through the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC).
It is important to recognize that medical staff are both members of a department AND work in association with a region-wide integrated health service or program.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority's Vision, Purpose and Values are our guiding principles when providing health care services to the populations we serve. Our intentions are reflected in our Five Year Strategic Plan.
