In Canada, approximately one in four people who are living with HIV are unaware of their infection. The new Provincial HIV Testing Guidelines recommend that healthcare providers know the HIV status of all patients under their care. Most people newly diagnosed with HIV have had many missed opportunities in health care for HIV diagnosis. In BC, up to 17% of patients already have advanced disease at the time of diagnosis.
New Provincial HIV Testing Guidelines
By making the offer of an HIV test a routine part of health care, we will help reduce the stigma associated with HIV. We know that early diagnosis and treatment can allow people living with HIV to live long, healthy lives and significantly reduces the likelihood of onward transmission. It is estimated that 54% of new HIV infections occur via transmission from individuals who are unaware of their HIV status.
Knowing is Better - offer an HIV test to your patients.
